The 90° hybrid coupler is a four-port device whose function is to equally distribute the power fed from any port to the other two ports without transmitting the power to the fourth port.

When the required output is larger than what can be obtained by a single device or a pair of devices, a "hybrid coupler" circuit can be used to combine two or more power amplifiers. Direct parallel operation of several devices is not satisfactory because the current is not evenly distributed among these devices.
